Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Pelvic floor physiotherapy

Pelvic floor physiotherapy involves the assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor. The muscles in the pelvis, between the hips and the sacrum, serve as a sling to support the reproductive organs as well as organs like the bladder and colon. The pelvic floor works together with other core musculature to ensure stability through the torso. When these muscles become too tight or loose, and fail to activate properly, the pelvic floor becomes dysfunctional and you may experience a multitude of symptoms including but not limited to pelvic, hip or low back pain, incontinence, sexual dysfunction, organ prolapse and constipation.

Because everything is connected through our bones and connective tissue, this dysfunction can also greatly affect other areas of the body, creating mechanical issues that prevent joints and musculature from moving appropriately. It can lead to other disorders, injuries, generalized pain and other symptoms in the knees, ankles, upper back, neck and shoulders.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy addresses the core issues that can lead to instability and misalignment, to ensure proper function through the pelvic floor and torso, while in turn stabilizing through the body as well. This treatment could be especially beneficial for women during pregnancy and postpartum
